Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has challenged his players to rise to the responsibility of representing Ghana and seize the opportunity to create a lasting legacy at the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

Speaking during a team meeting as preparations intensify for the tournament, the experienced coach reminded his squad of the expectations that come with wearing the national colours and called for total commitment both on and off the pitch.

Queiroz reflected on Ghana’s rich World Cup history, describing it as a source of inspiration for the current generation of players.

“This was only a warm-up,” he told the squad. “It was only to emphasise the history of the Ghanaian World Cup. The next game quiz will be tough.”

The former Portugal, Iran and Egypt coach stressed that every training session and match matters in the team’s quest to achieve something special on the world stage.

“We are here together to make history for Ghana,” Queiroz said. “Remember our responsibility.”

He also highlighted the influence players have on young supporters across the country, urging them to recognise the significance of being role models.

“When kids in Ghana start to put on a shirt with your number, it’s a great responsibility. When you sleep tonight, think about that,” he said.

Queiroz encouraged the squad to draw motivation from the achievements of previous Ghanaian teams, including the side that reached the quarter-finals of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, the country’s best-ever performance at the tournament.

“The players who built this history behind us have left us a message,” he said. “We have the opportunity at the next World Cup for other people to talk about you in the same way.”

The coach concluded his address with a call for focus, discipline and determination as the Black Stars continue their preparations.

“Let’s put our names, your names, your efforts in the history of Ghana,” he told the players.

Ghana will be making their fifth appearance at the FIFA World Cup and have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia.

The Black Stars begin their campaign against Panama on 17 June at BMO Field before taking on England at Gillette Stadium on 23 June. Their final group-stage match will be against Croatia on 27 June.

The four-time African champions will be hoping to progress beyond the group stage for the first time since their memorable run to the quarter-finals in 2010, as they seek to write a new chapter in Ghanaian football history.
