Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has announced that the Parliamentary Service will adopt the government’s 24-hour economy policy, positioning the legislative arm as a pilot institution for the nationwide rollout of the initiative.

The move, according to the Speaker, is aimed at addressing rising workloads among parliamentary staff and contributing to broader national efforts to tackle unemployment and improve productivity.

Speaking on Thursday, June 26, during the official presentation of the final 24-hour economy policy document in Parliament, Bagbin said the initiative will significantly expand working hours for staff, especially within the administrative arms of the House.

“This means they are going to work more hours; they will be reporting at 8:00 a.m. and may be going home at 10:00 p.m. or sometimes 11:00 p.m. particularly those in the official division of the House.”

“This will allow more people to work here and will help reduce unemployment. I can assure you that the load of work here is unimaginable,” he stated.

The presentation was led by Goosie Tanoh, Presidential Advisor on the 24-hour economy policy, who confirmed that the national launch will take place on Wednesday, July 2, 2025.

Describing the policy as transformative, Mr. Tanoh said it aims to create a more productive economy through continuous, round-the-clock activity. He outlined three core pillars:

  • Transforming production
  • Improving supply chain and market systems
  • Enhancing human capital

These are to be supported by four strategic programmes:

  • Grow 24 – focused on modernising agriculture
  • Make 24 – promoting industrial and manufacturing growth
  • Connect 24 – optimising supply chains and distribution
  • Aspire 24 – fostering a productivity-driven national mindset

The 24-hour economy forms a key part of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s policy platform. Its phased implementation will begin in Parliament and gradually extend to other sectors across the country.
