Bawumia Aide: Criticism of endorsements signals panic among opponents

Dr. Ekua Amoakoh, an aide to New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has dismissed criticism over a growing wave of MP endorsements in the Eastern Region, describing the backlash from rival camps as a sign of panic and declining support.

Her comments come after 15 out of 23 NPP Members of Parliament in the Eastern Region publicly endorsed Dr. Bawumia during a two-day campaign tour led by Achiase MP Kofi Ahenkorah Marfo.

Speaking on Channel One’s Newsroom on Friday, September 26, Dr. Amoakoh responded to allegations that the endorsements were orchestrated or influenced by external pressure.

“In any contest, when you hear one side beginning to complain a lot and always make excuses, it just means one thing, that that side is losing.”

She strongly rejected claims that MPs were being coerced into backing Dr. Bawumia, describing such assertions as disrespectful to their independence and intelligence.

“I hate it when we create the impression that people are manipulatable or they are like clay in the hands of people to be moulded. I don’t think the MPs are children or they can be manipulated to do A or B. For all of them to boldly come forward and be speaking to their constituents on behalf of His Excellency Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, I don’t think it’s a small thing.”

Dr. Amoakoh added that the intensity of the reactions from competing camps only confirms the impact of the endorsements.

“I also see how our opponents will downplay this kind of event. It only means that it really hit them at the core of their campaigns.”

Among the 15 MPs who have publicly thrown their support behind Dr. Bawumia are Kojo Oppong Nkrumah (Ofoase Ayirebi), Frank Annoh Dompreh (Nsawam Adoagyiri), Sammi Awuku (Akuapem North), and Kingsley Agyemang (Abuakwa South).

Dr. Bawumia is one of several candidates vying to lead the NPP into the 2028 general elections. Other contenders include Kennedy Agyapong, Kwabena Agyepong, Bryan Acheampong, and Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum.
