President John Dramani Mahama has expressed deep sorrow following the tragic deaths of six young women during a Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra.

Speaking at the launch of the Nkoko Nkitinkiti Poultry Initiative in Kumasi on Wednesday, November 12, President Mahama described the incident as “a heartbreaking loss for the entire nation,” adding that the victims were young women who had gathered with the hope of serving Ghana.

“The tragic news is that I have been informed by the military that six young women, who simply sought an opportunity to serve their nation, lost their lives in this heartbreaking incident. We are praying for the 12 others who remain in critical condition,” the President said.

He extended his condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

President Mahama further directed that a thorough investigation be conducted to determine the causes of the stampede and to ensure that safety measures at future public recruitment exercises are strengthened.

The deadly incident occurred earlier on Wednesday when thousands of job seekers overcrowded the El-Wak Sports Stadium in their bid to participate in the GAF enlistment process.

The Ghana Armed Forces has confirmed six deaths and 12 injuries, with the wounded currently receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital.

The recruitment exercise has been suspended indefinitely pending the outcome of investigations.
