Lovebirds in NDC politics? Dafeamekpor’s birthday message to Ebi Bright sets social media ablaze
A birthday message posted by North Dayi Member of Parliament and Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, to Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, Ebi Bright, has unexpectedly triggered widespread online discussion after many Ghanaians discovered for the first time that the two prominent National Democratic Congress (NDC) figures are married.
The public reaction followed a social media post shared by Dafeamekpor on Tuesday May 19 in celebration of Ebi Bright’s birthday, where he described her as a “sweet wife” and “wonderful mother,” while praising her efforts as Mayor of Tema.
The message quickly generated conversations across social media platforms, with many users expressing surprise that the two politicians, who have both been visible figures in the political landscape, are husband and wife.
In his message posted on X, formerly Twitter, the Majority Chief Whip wrote:
“A very Special Happy Birthday wishes to this brilliant woman, a sweet wife and a wonderful mother. From the entire family, we wish you good health & the fortitude of mind to continue to transform your beloved Tema, as Mayor. Tons of Love & a mighty hug from me & the kids. Spiritus Invictus!!!!”
The post instantly drew attention not only because of the affectionate public tribute but also because many Ghanaians were unaware of the longstanding relationship between the two NDC personalities.
Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor currently serves as the Majority Chief Whip in the 9th Parliament and represents the North Dayi Constituency in the Volta Region. Over the years, he has become one of the vocal parliamentary figures of the governing NDC, particularly on constitutional, legal and political issues.
His wife, Ebi Bright, is also a well-known public figure who previously built a career in Ghana’s entertainment industry before transitioning into politics and public service.
Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, Ebi Bright
Before her appointment as Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, Ebi Bright was widely recognised as an actress, development communicator and social activist who later became actively involved in NDC politics.
Her political ambitions became more visible during the 2024 general elections when she contested the Tema Central parliamentary seat on the ticket of the NDC.
Although she was unsuccessful in her parliamentary bid, she remained politically active and later secured appointment as Metropolitan Chief Executive for Tema in May 2025 after the NDC won both the presidential election and parliamentary majority.
Her appointment was historic because she became the first woman to serve as Mayor of Tema, one of Ghana’s most important industrial and port cities.
The renewed public attention surrounding the couple has also revived memories of the highly contested Tema Central parliamentary elections in 2024, where the re-collation of results generated national attention.
During the tense electoral processes at the Tema Regional Police Command headquarters, Dafeamekpor was frequently seen publicly supporting Ebi Bright throughout the proceedings.
At the time, many observers viewed his presence simply as party solidarity and support for an NDC parliamentary candidate, without realising the deeper personal connection between the two politicians.
Political observers now say the revelation explains why the North Dayi MP spent considerable time campaigning both in his constituency and in Tema Central during the 2024 elections.
Had Ebi Bright won the Tema Central parliamentary seat, the development would have created a rare political situation where husband and wife would simultaneously serve as Members of Parliament on the same side of the House.
