Ghana Armed Forces clear 51km of Accra-Kumasi expressway corridor as project gathers pace

Work on the Accra-Kumasi Expressway is making steady progress, with the Ghana Armed Forces having successfully cleared approximately 51 kilometres of the proposed corridor as the flagship infrastructure project moves forward under the direction of President John Dramani Mahama.
Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson disclosed the update in a Facebook post on Thursday, May 28, 2026, commending the military for what he described as phenomenal work on the transformational road project.
“Steadily, deliberately, and with remarkable professionalism, the foundation is being laid for what will become one of Ghana’s most strategic and economically transformative corridors,” he wrote.
The minister also revealed that compensation payments to residents and property owners affected by the project would commence in June, following the completion of assessments by the relevant state agencies.
The Ghana Armed Forces will oversee the disbursement of the compensation payments.
Dr Forson described the expressway as one of the country’s most significant infrastructure undertakings, expected to dramatically improve connectivity between Accra and Kumasi — Ghana’s two largest cities — while boosting trade and economic activity along one of the nation’s busiest road corridors.
The project has attracted considerable public interest since its announcement, with many viewing it as a long-overdue intervention on a route notorious for congestion, accidents, and deteriorating road conditions. Officials say the progress recorded so far reflects the government’s commitment to delivering on its infrastructure promises.
