The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a formal travel advisory urging Ghanaians to avoid non-essential travel to South Africa until further notice, citing a surge in xenophobic attacks targeting African nationals in the country.

Released on Monday, June 1, 2026, the advisory expressed the government’s deep concern over incidents allegedly carried out by groups presenting themselves as anti-immigrant vigilantes, which have resulted in injuries, business closures, looting, and the destruction of property belonging to African migrants.

The government disclosed that it had already taken a series of diplomatic measures in response, including lodging formal protests at the highest diplomatic level, summoning South Africa’s Acting High Commissioner in Accra, petitioning the African Union, and facilitating the evacuation of Ghanaian nationals who wished to return home.

“The Government of the Republic of Ghana hereby advises Ghanaian nationals to exercise extreme caution in their travel plans and avoid non-essential travel to South Africa until further notice,” the statement read.

Ghanaians already residing in South Africa were encouraged to maintain regular contact with the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria for consular assistance and support. The government also assured citizens that efforts to facilitate the safe return of those wishing to leave South Africa would continue.

Ghana used the advisory to call directly on the South African government to provide adequate protection for Africans within its borders and take decisive action to restore law and order, invoking the spirit of Pan-Africanism and African integration in its appeal.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the welfare and interests of Ghanaian nationals wherever they may be.
