Two Swept Away by Floodwaters Near Kasoa–Domeabra Road

Two people, believed to include a child, are feared to have been swept away by raging floodwaters at Nurses Quarters Junction after the overflow of River Agyei submerged sections of the Kasoa–Domeabra road in the Ga South Municipality, triggering a desperate but ultimately tragic attempt to cross the flooded stretch.
The Municipal Chief Executive for Awutu Senya East, Seth Serwonoo Banini, disclosed the incident while assisting the Ga South Municipal Assembly to manage traffic and restore movement on the affected road.
He cautioned that the reports had not yet been officially confirmed but said initial information pointed to an adult and a child being overpowered by the fast-moving currents.
According to him, the child had been caught in the floodwaters, prompting an adult to wade in to help — only to be swept away as well.
“The child was being carried by the floodwaters, and in an attempt by the adult to help, both were also swept away,” he told Adom News.
Banini also moved to correct a geographical misrepresentation of the incident, stressing that the tragedy did not occur in Kasoa as some reports had suggested, but within the Ga South Municipality.
“I want to clarify that the incident did not occur in Kasoa. It happened within the Ga South Municipality,” he said.
Heavy rainfall in the area triggered the overflow of River Agyei, which quickly inundated sections of the Kasoa–Domeabra road, bringing both vehicular and pedestrian movement to a standstill and creating the dangerous conditions that led to the incident.
Awutu Senya East NADMO Director Nash Nyandey used the occasion to issue a public warning, urging residents living near riverbanks and major drainage channels to stay on high alert in the days ahead, particularly given forecasts from the Ghana Meteorological Agency predicting continued rainfall across the area.
He also renewed calls for the public to stop dumping refuse into drains, warning that blocked drainage systems significantly amplify the destructive impact of flooding.
“People should desist from dumping refuse into drains during rainfall. It contributes significantly to flooding,” he cautioned.
