GPRTU to introduce cashless fare payment system to enhance safety and transparency

The proposed platform will enable passengers to pay fares electronically and receive receipts for every transaction, reducing the need for drivers and their assistants to carry large amounts of cash during daily operations.

Speaking on the initiative, GPRTU Deputy Public Relations Officer Samuel Amoah said the system forms part of the union’s broader digitalisation agenda aimed at modernising public transport services.

Under the proposed arrangement, fare payments will be managed through a centralised platform overseen by station authorities, rather than being handled directly by drivers and their mates. The collected funds will subsequently be disbursed to drivers through an established process.

Mr. Amoah explained that the move is expected to significantly improve security for commercial drivers, many of whom have been targeted by armed robbers while returning home with their daily earnings.

“Once the money is paid through the system, records will be generated and receipts issued, making transactions more transparent and secure,” he said.

The announcement comes amid growing conversations about the adoption of digital payment systems in Ghana’s commercial transport sector, particularly following a recent viral social media video that sparked debate over a mobile money fare transaction.

Although mobile money payments are not currently compulsory on commercial vehicles, the GPRTU believes a standardised cashless platform will provide a safer and more efficient payment option for both passengers and transport operators.

According to the union, work is currently underway to develop the system and finalise the operational framework required for its implementation.

The initiative is expected to support ongoing efforts to modernise Ghana’s transport sector while enhancing convenience, accountability, and safety in fare collection.
