Three arrested in Upper East over alleged human trafficking, forced prostitution

The Upper East Regional Police Command has arrested three suspects over an alleged human trafficking operation in Gbane, a community in the Talensi District, where young women were reportedly forced into prostitution and a newborn baby was allegedly offered for sale.
The suspects, identified as Peace Agbede, Favour Sunday Udo and Faith Levy, are currently in police custody and are expected to be arraigned before court as investigations continue.
According to preliminary police investigations, the main suspect, Peace Agbede, allegedly lured one of the victims from Nigeria to Ghana with promises of helping her pursue a career in the Ghanaian movie industry because of her appearance.
Police said the victim accepted the offer and travelled to Ghana, only to discover that the promise was false. Instead, she was allegedly taken to the mining community of Gbane-Tongo, where she was forced into prostitution.
Investigators further revealed that the victim was allegedly required to pay GH¢400 each day to Peace Agbede from the proceeds of her activities.
The case took a more disturbing turn after the victim gave birth on June 26, 2026. Police allege that Peace Agbede and her accomplice, Favour Sunday Udo, later approached the new mother and attempted to persuade her to sell her newborn baby to a prospective buyer for GH¢20,000.
During a search of Peace Agbede’s residence, officers recovered six record books bearing the names Esther, Mary, Bright and Silver, along with 265 unused condoms believed to be connected to the alleged prostitution operation.
Police also rescued four other female victims, aged between 18 and 20 years, who are receiving the necessary support as investigations continue.
The Upper East Regional Police Command says the suspects remain in custody and will face the appropriate legal processes while efforts continue to uncover the full extent of the alleged trafficking network.
