President John Dramani Mahama has assured Ghana’s retired workers that pension benefits will be improved as the country’s economy recovers, promising that senior citizens will share in the gains of national economic growth.

Speaking at the Republic Day Senior Citizens’ Luncheon in Accra, President Mahama said his administration is focused on rebuilding the economy while ensuring that retirees who dedicated their lives to national development enjoy a decent standard of living.

“I pledge to our senior citizens that as the economy improves, we will improve not only wages and salaries for the active working population but also improve pensions for those who have sacrificed tirelessly for our dear nation, Ghana,” the President said.

He noted that the government is laying the foundation for sustainable economic growth through the implementation of the 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Programme, which is designed to boost production, create jobs and increase exports.

According to President Mahama, the initiative will prioritise investments in skills development, technology, manufacturing and value addition to strengthen Ghana’s productive capacity.

“We’re investing in skills, technology, manufacturing and value addition because we believe that Ghana must become a nation that produces more, exports more and creates prosperity for all,” he stated.

The President explained that restoring macroeconomic stability remains one of his administration’s top priorities, adding that the benefits of economic recovery would be enjoyed by both active workers and pensioners.

He stressed that honouring senior citizens should extend beyond ceremonial events, saying the greatest tribute government can pay them is to build a resilient and prosperous nation that rewards their lifelong contributions.

President Mahama also highlighted his government’s efforts to improve healthcare, strengthen the education sector, modernise agriculture, deepen democratic governance and ensure the prudent management of public resources.

He reaffirmed his commitment to enhancing the welfare of older persons, emphasising that Ghana’s economic recovery must result in improved living standards for retirees who have served the nation over the years.
