Armed robber shot dead in Lashibi as quick-thinking Momo vendor fights back

A mobile money merchant turned the tables on armed assailants attempting to relieve him of a substantial cash consignment, opening fire on his attackers during a brazen daylight robbery and fatally wounding one of the two gunmen orchestrating the assault.
The confrontation erupted on July 3, 2026, at Lashibi when two masked individuals on a motorbike intercepted the vendor as he drove homeward after completing his workday.
His vehicle carried a bag stuffed with GH¢140,000 — a target sufficiently lucrative to justify violent intervention in the minds of the perpetrators.
The assailants announced their intentions through gunfire. They unleashed rounds that punctured the victim’s rear tyre and shattered his windscreen, attempting to disable his vehicle and create vulnerability whilst they extracted the cash.
The intended victim, however, refused to surrender without resistance. He returned fire, transforming what was meant to be a one-sided armed robbery into an exchange of gunfire. His marksmanship proved decisive — one of the attackers crumpled at the scene, fatally wounded by the merchant’s counterattack.
His accomplice, witnessing the turn of events, abandoned the robbery objective entirely. He fled astride the motorbike, leaving behind the bag containing the full GH¢140,000 that had motivated the attack.

Police responding to the scene conducted a thorough search of the deceased assailant and recovered an armoury of weaponry and cash.
An AK-47 assault rifle came into police possession, accompanied by two ammunition magazines laden with fifty-five rounds and eleven additional cartridges.
The suspect also carried GH¢3,000 in cash, a Samsung mobile telephone and an identification card bearing the name Innocent Elemuwa Akachukwu and indicating an age of forty-six.
Officers retrieved expended ordnance from the scene: five spent AK-47 cartridges and two pistol rounds — evidence documenting the firefight that had erupted.
The deceased remains at the Police Hospital mortuary, where pathological examination will be conducted and formal identification procedures initiated.
The Sakumono District Police Command has assumed investigative control of the case whilst field operations continue tracking the accomplice who managed to flee the scene and whose identity and whereabouts remain unknown.
