Affail Monney calls for national review of special prosecutor’s office

Former President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Roland Affail Monney, has urged a national reflection on the relevance of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), saying it is time for Ghana to take “a hard look” at the institution.

Speaking on the JoyNews AM Show on Monday, December 8, Mr. Monney said it has become “common knowledge” that the OSP “stands accused of being rich in spectacle but poor in delivery.”

He noted that many Ghanaians who share this view are simply concerned the country is not getting value for money “as far as the OSP is concerned.”

Mr. Monney said he has closely followed the ongoing debate over whether the OSP should be maintained or scrapped. “I have listened to CDD; I have analysed the comments by people who share the view of CDD,” he stated.

He added that earlier on Monday, he read with “all-absorbing attention and all-consuming seriousness” a position put forward by former Speaker of Parliament, Professor Mike Oquaye, whom he described as “a seasoned lawyer and experienced statesman whose comments should not be taken for granted.”

According to Mr. Monney, Prof. Oquaye argues that the establishment of the OSP amounts to duplication and that the time has come for Ghana to “do away with this office.”

“In this re-enforcing, there is the need to take a hard and long look at that office and see whether it is fulfilling the mandate for which it was established,” Mr. Monney said.

He called for a non-partisan, national conversation on the future of the OSP.

“As a nation, this is the time for us to come together, devoid of political perspectives. Let’s put on nationalistic lenses to examine and scrutinise whether Ghana as a nation deserves this Office of the Special Prosecutor,” he said.
