Voters in the Akwatia Constituency of the Eastern Region are casting their ballots today, Tuesday, September 2, 2025, in a by-election to elect a new Member of Parliament following the passing of the incumbent, Ernest Kumi.

Over 50,000 registered voters are expected to participate in the closely watched contest, which has shaped up to be a fierce political battle between the country’s two major parties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The NDC is represented by Bernard Bediako Baidoo, while the NPP has fielded Solomon Kwame Asumadu. Both candidates have mounted vigorous campaigns, drawing in national party leaders and top executives in a final push to sway voters.

In preparation for the vote, the Ghana Police Service has deployed more than 5,500 officers across the constituency to maintain peace and order throughout the electoral process. Authorities have warned against any form of violence, voter intimidation, or breach of electoral laws, and have assured the public of swift action against offenders.

The Electoral Commission (EC) has also reaffirmed its commitment to a transparent, credible, and efficient election. Special logistical arrangements have been made to ensure the timely distribution of voting materials, smooth monitoring, and prompt collation of results.

Today’s by-election is being closely monitored nationwide and is widely seen as a bellwether for the 2028 general elections. Political analysts say the outcome could provide early insight into voter sentiment and serve as a momentum builder for whichever party emerges victorious.
