Argentina survive Cape Verde scare to reach World Cup last 16

Argentina needed extra time to overcome a spirited Cape Verde side and book their place in the World Cup last 16 after a dramatic 3-2 victory.
Lionel Messi gave Argentina the lead in the 29th minute, but Cape Verde refused to be overawed by the world champions and responded with a determined display that pushed the contest beyond 90 minutes.
Duarte levelled for Cape Verde in the 59th minute. Martinez scored in the 92 minute into extra time to put Argentina on course before substitute S. L. Cabral struck in the 103rd minute to put the island nation level again.
However, Argentina’s experience proved decisive though they needed an own goal from Borges after a header by Romero from a Messi corner.
Cape Verde’s players were left heartbroken, but their performance will be remembered as one of courage and belief against one of football’s most decorated teams.
Argentina now face Egypt in the Round of 16 on 7 July at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.
