Frimpong Manso, the coach of Bibiani Goldstars, has expressed skepticism about Ghana’s chances of winning the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast.

While not ruling out the possibility entirely, Manso believes it will be a challenging endeavor for the Black Stars to secure the coveted trophy.

Ghana, seeking its fifth AFCON title, last clinched the championship in 1982 in Libya. Despite the historical success, Manso acknowledges the difficulty of the upcoming tournament, citing the unpredictability of surprises in football competitions.

The former Ghana international emphasized that optimism for Ghana’s success should be contingent on the team’s performance in the early stages of the tournament.

“It will be very difficult for Ghana to win the AFCON but we can’t rule the team out entirely.

These surprises often happen in tournaments, when the hope is little that’s when big surprises happen. I cannot say the Black Stars are going to win the tournament.

I will be very optimistic of winning the tournament when we qualify to the next stage (round 16) of the competition” he said on Kessben FM .

Ghana has already begun its preparations for the AFCON, opening camp in Kumasi.

Placed in Group B, the Black Stars will face challenges from Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique. The AFCON 2023 is scheduled to kick off on January 13 and run through February 11, 2024.

While Ghana has a rich history in the AFCON, winning the title four times, the recent quest for championship glory has been elusive.

Manso’s cautious optimism reflects the uncertainties and competitive nature of the prestigious continental tournament.
