How Ghanaian MP O.K Frimpong was dramatically nabbed in Amsterdam

Asante Akyem North Member of Parliament Ohene Kwame Frimpong found himself in handcuffs on Sunday morning in a dramatic mid-airport arrest that has sent shockwaves through Ghana’s political establishment.
The lawmaker had boarded KLM Flight 590 at Kotoka International Airport on Saturday, May 9, departing through Gate C7 at approximately 10:10 p.m. on what appeared to be a routine trip. The flight touched down at Schiphol Airport’s Gate F3 in Amsterdam at around 4:36 GMT the following morning.
What happened next was anything but routine. As the aircraft came to a halt and passengers readied themselves to disembark, the pilot’s voice came over the intercom with an unusual instruction — everyone was to remain seated for a security check.
Moments later, a team of Dutch security officials boarded the aircraft and moved purposefully through the cabin, bypassing economy class entirely and heading straight for the Business Class section.
There, they located the MP, who was seated alongside another senior Ghanaian government official travelling on the same flight.
The officials formally identified him, read him his rights, and placed him in handcuffs in full view of fellow passengers before escorting him off the plane and into a waiting security vehicle on the tarmac below.
He was subsequently taken into custody, with his arrest linked to allegations of romance scams and money laundering. Dutch authorities are yet to release an official statement on the matter.
Back in Ghana, former Asante Akyem North MP Andy Appiah-Kubi appealed for calm, urging the public to allow due process to take its course.
“He remains innocent until proven guilty, and we expect due process to be followed before any conclusions are drawn,” he said, adding that fundamental human rights and the rule of law must be respected throughout proceedings.
Diplomatic engagements between Ghanaian and Dutch authorities remain ongoing.
