Black Stars must start winning again to win Back Ghanaian hearts – Jordan Ayew

Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew says Ghana’s national team must return to winning ways if it is to restore the connection and optimism that once existed between the team and its supporters.
Speaking to Ghana Football Association (GFA) media, Ayew reflected on some of the most memorable moments of his international career and stressed that success on the pitch remains the only route to rebuilding confidence among fans.
“The Black Stars have given me a lot,” Ayew said. “I’ve had many good moments with the team, especially in my early days. I want to get that feeling back, and the only way to get it back is by winning. We need to start winning again.”
The 33-year-old acknowledged that Ghana’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup rekindled some of the excitement surrounding the national team, but he believes greater achievements lie ahead.
“I felt that emotion a little bit when we qualified for the World Cup, but I know there’s more to come,” he said. “Something good is on the way. If we keep pushing, we will be rewarded because the last few years have been difficult. It hasn’t been easy with Ghanaians.”
The Black Stars have endured a challenging period, with disappointing performances and growing frustration among supporters leading to increased scrutiny of players and officials.
Ayew appealed for patience and understanding from fans, reminding them that footballers also face personal and emotional challenges away from the game.
“People get frustrated and say a lot of things, but you have to understand that we are human beings,” he said. “Today may be good, tomorrow may not be the same. Players have emotions. They have families. Sometimes you need to put yourself in our shoes.”
Ghana will begin their World Cup campaign in Group L, where they have been drawn alongside Panama, England and Croatia. The Black Stars face Panama in their opening match on 17 June.
For Ayew, the objective is simple: deliver victories, rebuild trust and bring back the pride and joy that once defined the Black Stars.
