Ghana’s Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams says he has not received any official notice that Carlos Queiroz has resigned as head coach of the Black Stars, despite the Portuguese coach appearing to announce his departure on social media.

Queiroz, 73, said in an online post that he was leaving the role “with pride” after Ghana’s 2026 World Cup campaign.

But Mr Adams told Joy News that the government and the Ghana Football Association would only treat a formal letter as confirmation of the coach’s resignation.

“We have not received any resignation letter from the FA to that effect, and I don’t take it that people resigned on social media,” he said.

“He wasn’t appointed on social media, so I don’t think that he resigned via social media.”

Queiroz was appointed on a short-term contract to lead Ghana at the World Cup, replacing Otto Addo before the tournament.

His time in charge ended with Ghana’s 1-0 defeat by Colombia in the Round of 32, bringing an end to a campaign that saw the Black Stars reach the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time since 2010.

Mr Adams said he had not yet held discussions with Queiroz about the team’s performance, but expected the former Portugal and Iran coach to submit a detailed technical report.

“We have all been watching the games, and so we all appreciate that,” he said. “We have not had the opportunity to engage him to get a detailed report. That report will surely come.”

The minister said the report would help authorities assess both the technical and structural problems affecting the national side, as Ghana begins planning for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

He also backed Queiroz’s apparent call for broader reforms, saying the Black Stars’ challenges extended beyond what happens during matches.

“And he’s right when he says it’s not just going to be on the pitch,” Mr Adams said. “There are off-pitch issues, and there are on-pitch issues also. I’m happy he has stated it clearly.”

Ghana, four-time African champions, will now turn their focus to rebuilding after their World Cup exit, while uncertainty remains over whether Queiroz will formally continue in the role.
