Drivers warn of 20% transport fare increment amid VIP fare dispute

Regional Chairmen of the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana (C-DAG), alongside other transport unions across the country, have strongly condemned what they describe as the unilateral increase in transport fares by some VIP bus operators without prior consultation with industry stakeholders.

The unions have subsequently issued a one-week ultimatum to the Minister for Transport, the leadership of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), and the National Chairman of C-DAG to take immediate steps to address the matter and halt the unapproved fare adjustments.

In a statement dated May 19, 2026, and signed by several regional chairmen, the group argued that the actions of the VIP operators were unfair to commercial drivers operating within cities and districts who continue to grapple with rising operational costs.

According to the statement, commercial drivers are burdened with increasing fuel prices, high costs of spare parts, taxes, and vehicle maintenance expenses without any corresponding fare adjustments.

“It is unfair for one section of the transport sector to increase fares at will while commercial drivers operating within the cities and districts continue to bear the rising cost of fuel, spare parts, taxes, and vehicle maintenance without any corresponding adjustments,” the statement said.

The unions further expressed concern over what they described as the silence of the authorities on the issue, warning that the situation was creating tension and confusion within the transport sector as well as among commuters nationwide.

They cautioned that if concrete measures are not taken by Monday to restore fairness and address the disparity in the sector, drivers affiliated with the unions across the country will implement a 20 percent increase in transport fares nationwide.
