England players are expected to shake hands with Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey ahead of Tuesday’s FIFA World Cup Group L clash in Boston, despite the ongoing criminal case involving the former Arsenal player.

Partey missed Ghana’s opening 1-0 victory over Panama after he was refused entry into Canada because of legal proceedings in the United Kingdom. However, the 33-year-old is expected to feature against England after being granted permission to enter the United States.

Several members of England’s squad, including Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka, previously played alongside Partey at Arsenal, adding another layer of interest to the high-profile encounter.

The Football Association has not issued any guidance to England players regarding pre-match protocol, meaning the traditional handshake between the two teams is expected to take place before kick-off.

FA chief executive Mark Bullingham said England’s focus at the tournament should remain firmly on football, while manager Thomas Tuchel insisted his players should not be distracted by off-field issues.

“At some point, it must be allowed for a football team that is sent to a World Cup to be a football team and not be a political statement,” Tuchel said.

Partey has pleaded not guilty to seven counts of rape and one count of sexual assault relating to allegations made by four women. His trial is scheduled to begin in January 2027.

His lawyer, Jenny Wiltshire, has previously said the Ghana international “continues to deny all charges” and has “cooperated fully with the police throughout.”

Partey’s expected return is a major boost for Ghana, who began their World Cup campaign with a win over Panama and will be seeking another positive result against England in what could prove to be a decisive Group L fixture.
