FC Nordsjaelland confirm record sale of Ghanaian midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi to Coventry City

FC Nordsjaelland have confirmed the departure of Ghana midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi to Premier League side Coventry City in the biggest transfer in the Danish club’s history.

Nordsjaelland announced on Friday that the 20-year-old had been sold to Coventry, bringing an end to a journey that began at the club after his time at Ghana’s Right to Dream Academy.

“Today FC Nordsjælland has sold 20-year-old Caleb Yirenkyi to the English Premier League club Coventry City. The transfer is the largest in FC Nordsjælland’s history,” the club said.

Yirenkyi joined Nordsjaelland in January 2024 after turning 18, having spent much of his youth at the Right to Dream Academy in Ghana, where he joined at the age of nine.

His development in Denmark was rapid.

The midfielder established himself in Nordsjaelland’s first team and went on to make 67 competitive appearances, scoring 12 goals and providing 15 assists.

His performances also earned him recognition in the Danish Superliga, where he was named in the Team of the Season.

Nordsjaelland’s academy has long been recognised for developing young players and providing them with a pathway to European football, and Yirenkyi’s move to Coventry represents another significant success for that model.

The club’s announcement highlighted the midfielder’s journey from Ghana to Denmark and now to England’s top flight.

Yirenkyi’s departure also marks a significant financial milestone for Nordsjaelland, with the club describing the transfer as the largest sale in its history.

For the Ghanaian midfielder, the move brings an end to a two-and-a-half-year spell in Denmark and opens a new chapter in the Premier League.

From joining Right to Dream at nine, to making his breakthrough with Nordsjaelland and now becoming the club’s record sale, Yirenkyi’s rise has been a remarkable one.

Nordsjaelland will now have to plan for life without one of their standout young players, while Yirenkyi begins the next stage of his career in England.
