Ghana’s new Defence Minister Gilbert Adjei pledges renewed focus on national security

Ghana’s newly reassigned Defence Minister, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, has promised to bring renewed energy, commitment and a strong sense of duty to the role as he begins work on strengthening the country’s national security.

Mr Adjei was moved to the Defence Ministry after serving as Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources. He thanked President John Dramani Mahama for giving him the opportunity to continue serving Ghana in a different capacity.

In a Facebook post published on Friday, 7 August 2026, Mr Adjei reflected on his time at the Works, Housing and Water Resources Ministry, describing it as a period defined by service, collaboration and dedication to delivering on his responsibilities.

“I am profoundly grateful to His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama for the confidence reposed in me and the opportunity to serve the people of Ghana as Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources,” he wrote.

He also praised the staff who worked with him during his time at the ministry, recognising their professionalism and contribution to the progress made during his tenure.

“I extend my deepest appreciation to the dedicated staff of the Ministry of Works and Housing, Ghana, for their hard work, professionalism and unwavering support. The progress and successes we achieved together would not have been possible without your commitment and sacrifice,” he said.

Mr Adjei said he was approaching his new Defence portfolio with humility and a heightened awareness of the responsibility attached to the position. He added that he was looking forward to playing a meaningful role in national efforts to improve Ghana’s security.

“As I take on my new responsibility at the Ministry of Defense, I do so with humility, renewed energy and a deep sense of duty,” he said.

“I am optimistic about the road ahead and look forward to contributing meaningfully to our collective efforts to build a stronger and more secure Ghana,” he added.

The new minister also expressed his appreciation to Ghanaians for their continued support and called on citizens to remain involved in the country’s development.

“The work continues. Let us keep our sleeves rolled up, remain focused and work even harder to deliver for Ghana,” Mr Adjei said.

He urged a collective approach as he starts the next stage of his public service, stressing that the responsibilities ahead would require broad participation.

“I call on all hands to be on deck as we embrace this new chapter of service together,” he said.

Mr Adjei’s reassignment marks a change in his ministerial responsibilities, from the Works, Housing and Water Resources portfolio to Defence. His first public comments in the new role focused on continuity of service, appreciation for his former colleagues and a pledge to support efforts to build a stronger and more secure Ghana.
