Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), George Afriyie, has launched a scathing critique of GFA President Kurt Okraku, accusing him of prioritizing personal ambition over the development of Ghanaian football.

Afriyie’s comments come in response to a controversial proposal from the GFA’s Statutes Review Committee, which suggests extending the presidential term limit from two terms to three.

This proposal is expected to be a major topic at the upcoming 31st GFA Ordinary Congress, scheduled for Tuesday, August 12 at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram.

Speaking on Asempa FM, George Afriyie alleged that Kurt Okraku is the main force behind the proposal and slammed its timing, citing Ghana’s recent failures on the international stage.

“CHAN is ongoing, and Ghana is not there. The Black Stars could not qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), and yet the GFA is focused on extending the president’s term limit,” Afriyie said.
“The only thing keeping us from total embarrassment is women’s football. Kurt Okraku is only interested in himself—not in developing our game.”

Afriyie also raised concerns about the domestic transfer market, pointing out the lack of high-value player sales under Okraku’s leadership.

“For the past five seasons under Kurt Okraku, the top 25 player transfers have been dominated by Right to Dream. No player is hitting a GH₵1 million transfer fee from Ghana anymore. It shows the game isn’t in good hands,” he said.

He criticized the GFA’s apparent shift in priorities, arguing that the current leadership is more focused on consolidating power than solving the real problems facing Ghana football.

The proposal to extend the GFA president’s term comes at a time when Ghana football is grappling with declining performances, low public confidence, and administrative unrest.

Many believe that the focus should instead be on reviving the domestic league, strengthening youth development, and restoring Ghana’s competitiveness on the continental stage.

As the GFA Congress approaches, the debate over leadership and direction is set to intensify, with stakeholders like George Afriyie pushing back strongly against what they see as a misguided power grab.
