George Afriyie urges GFA to take time over Black Stars coaching appointment

Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association, George Afriyie, has urged the FA to avoid rushing into appointing a new head coach for the Ghana national football team following the dismissal of Otto Addo.
Addo was relieved of his duties after Ghana’s 2-1 defeat to Germany national football team in Stuttgart, a result that came on the back of a heavy 5-1 loss to Austria in Vienna.
With the 2026 World Cup approaching, Afriyie has called for a measured approach, stressing that the decision should not be driven by urgency but by long-term planning.
“There should be no rush to appoint a new coach,” he said on Asempa FM.
“The FA must carry out broader consultations and appoint a good coach not just for the World Cup, but also for a long-term project beyond it,” he added.
Afriyie’s comments come at a critical time for Ghana, as the national team seeks stability following recent changes and underwhelming performances.
The Black Stars are expected to regroup in May for upcoming international friendlies against Mexico and Wales, which will serve as final preparations before the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The FA now faces the challenge of finding the right candidate to lead the team, not only into the tournament, but into a new phase of development beyond it.
