If Parliament passes anti-LGBTQ+ bill, I will sign it- Mahama

President John Mahama has reiterated his commitment to what he describes as Ghana’s traditional family and moral values, stressing that gender is determined at birth and that the family unit remains central to national stability.
Speaking in Accra on Tuesday, November 18, during a courtesy call by leaders of the Christian Council of Ghana, the President said his views align fully with the Council’s long-held positions on family and social values.
“A person’s gender is determined at birth, and the family is the foundation of our nation. That is our position. So there are no questions or equivocations about what we believe,” he said.
He stated that his stance mirrors that of the Christian Council, noting, “I believe we are completely aligned with the Christian Council in terms of your belief.”
President Mahama also endorsed the Speaker of Parliament’s call for the bill currently before the House to be relaid and debated to allow for any necessary amendments or clarifications.
“We agree with the Speaker to relay the bill and let Parliament debate it, and then if there are any amendments or whatever that have to be done,” he said.
He added that the decision of Parliament and the will of the Ghanaian people will ultimately guide the outcome.
“If the Parliament of the people of Ghana endorses the bill, votes on it and passes it, and it comes to me as President, I will sign it,” he declared.
