The President of the Ghana Football Association, Kurt Okraku, has expressed disappointment over footballers of African descent opting to represent European countries instead of their countries of origin.

Speaking ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Okraku said it was painful to see “full-blooded Ghanaians” choosing to play for nations such as England despite their African roots.

His comments come amid ongoing debate surrounding the nationality choices of dual-eligible players, including Kobbie Mainoo, who was born in England to Ghanaian parents and currently represents the English national team.

“Full-blooded Ghanaians should be representing their countries. That’s my clear opinion on representation when it comes to national teams in football,” Okraku told Sky Sports.

The GFA president, however, acknowledged the quality of the English national side and stressed the need to respect the decisions made by players and coaches.

“England has a good team. It’s important we respect the manager and the experience that he brings on board, but what is also true is that they will meet a very, very competitive and determined Ghanaian side,” he added.

When asked directly about Mainoo’s decision to play for England, Okraku admitted his frustration.

“Well, it’s most unfortunate, to be honest,” he said. “I wish I never comment on such situations because, for example, when I watched the French national team win the World Cup, and the team is made up of 11 Africans, it always tells me there’s a subject that has to be discussed.”

The issue of dual nationality has remained a sensitive topic in African football, with many European nations continuing to benefit from players with African heritage developed through their football systems.

Kobbie Mainoo is expected to face Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where England and the Black Stars are set for a highly anticipated clash.

The Ghana Football Association President will be hoping the black stars will pick up the maximum points when the play England at the World Cup.
