President John Dramani Mahama has authorised the immediate repatriation of 300 Ghanaian nationals living in South Africa, following a fresh wave of xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals in parts of the country.

The operation is to be overseen by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, working in close coordination with Ghana’s High Commission in Pretoria to facilitate the safe return of the affected citizens.

The move follows an earlier advisory issued by the Foreign Ministry, which called on Ghanaians residing in South Africa to formally register with the High Commission should they feel unsafe or require assistance amid the deteriorating security situation.

The 300 individuals cleared for evacuation are understood to be among those who came forward through that registration process.

Government sources indicate that the intervention is part of a broader framework aimed at safeguarding the interests and lives of Ghanaians living beyond the country’s borders, particularly in regions experiencing heightened instability.

The Mahama administration reiterated its commitment to the protection and welfare of all Ghanaian citizens, whether at home or abroad, describing the evacuation as a direct response to the urgent need to shield nationals from harm.

Further information on logistics, timelines, and the specifics of the evacuation arrangements is expected to be released by authorities in the days ahead.
