The Minority caucus in Parliament is calling for an immediate appearance by the Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, to address the escalating wave of suspected ritual killings and violent crimes across the country.

Describing the situation as “alarming,” the Minority expressed grave concerns over the safety of ordinary Ghanaians. On Saturday, July 26, Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh called for a closed-door session with the minister, invoking Order 60 of Parliament’s Standing Orders to push for an urgent meeting.

“We cannot let this issue fade away. We need the Interior Minister, who also serves as National Security Minister, to be here,” Annoh-Dompreh stated. “Given the sensitivity of this matter, we must engage him privately to receive updates on the government’s security plans.”

The Minority is pressing for decisive action from the government to curb the disturbing rise in violent crime, which includes ritual killings, shootings, and other forms of violent acts that have gripped various communities.

On the night of Saturday, July 26, the Nalerigu Senior High School campus was the scene of a deadly shooting that claimed the lives of two students. While some local sources suggest the attack may be linked to the ongoing Bawku tribal conflict, security agencies have not confirmed a connection. A similar incident occurred recently at Bawku SHS, where a student was fatally shot.

In response to these attacks and the growing security concerns, the government has tightened the curfew in Bawku, now limiting movement to between 6:00 am and 2:00 pm daily.

Further complicating the situation, a fatal shooting occurred on July 25 in Asawase, Ashanti Region, where an unidentified man was gunned down by two motorbike assailants. This incident came just days after the Kusasi Chief in Ashanti Region was killed under similar circumstances.

The rise in violence has sparked widespread fear and calls for stronger government and security force interventions to restore public safety and confidence.
