Police deny raiding NPP Bono East chairman’s residence, clarify fatal shooting incident

The Ghana Police Service has dismissed reports suggesting that officers raided the residence of the Bono East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Ibrahim Baba Bukari, leading to the death of an individual.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Police described the reports as “false and misleading,” asserting that no operation was targeted at Mr. Bukari’s home.
According to the Police, the incident occurred at about 1:20 a.m. on Friday, August 1, 2025, when a team from the Bono East Regional Command responded to intelligence on a robbery in progress.
Upon arrival at the scene, the officers encountered suspects attempting to flee over a wall. One of them, identified as Seidu Bukari, was shot during the operation and later died in the hospital.
Subsequent investigations confirmed that the house was indeed owned by the NPP Regional Chairman, but Police emphasized that it was not the target of the operation.
The deceased, Police say, was a known member of a notorious robbery syndicate responsible for several motorcycle thefts in Techiman and surrounding areas. The stolen bikes were allegedly trafficked to Kumasi for resale.
The gang is believed to have returned to Techiman to commit another robbery when they were intercepted. A motorbike and other suspected robbery tools were recovered at the scene.
A manhunt is currently underway for the remaining suspects who escaped.
To ensure a thorough and transparent investigation, the Inspector-General of Police has deployed a special task force comprising personnel from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), the Police Intelligence Directorate, and the Police Professional Standards Bureau.
The Ghana Police Service has urged the public to disregard the misinformation and remain calm as investigations continue.
