The Director-General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Professor Amin Alhassan, has hit back at criticisms from unionised staff, turning the spotlight on the performance of Divisional Union Chairman, Sam Nat Kevor.

Speaking on Channel One’s Newsroom on Thursday, August 28, Prof. Alhassan challenged Kevor’s credibility as a critic, claiming the journalist has failed to contribute professionally in recent years.

“The guy who was speaking in red [Sam Nat Kevor] he is a reporter, a journalist. In the last five years, he hasn’t written one story in his life. And he comes to say he wants to change GBC?” he said.

His remarks come in response to renewed calls from the union for his dismissal, with accusations ranging from mismanagement and an expired tenure to neglect of staff welfare and financial impropriety.

But Prof. Alhassan dismissed the allegations, suggesting that resistance to change is fueling the backlash. He maintained that ongoing reforms are essential for modernising the nearly century-old broadcaster.

“We are looking to re-strategise. After 90 years, the practices we’ve been used to will not take us into the next 90 years,” he said.

“So all that we are saying is, GBC has to be reborn — and that rebirth is what is hitting hard on the lazy ones.”
