Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has attributed the Black Stars’ qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup to his direct engagement with players and technical teams.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM on Tuesday, Mr Adams said his role extended beyond administrative duties, focusing instead on motivating players through regular interaction and presence at training camps.

“It was an engagement,” he said. “And I didn’t just do it for the Black Stars, I did it for most of our national teams, including the Black Queens.”

The minister, who is also the Member of Parliament for Buem, explained that his consistent visits to training sessions played a key role in boosting team morale. According to him, members of the women’s national team, the Black Queens, described his level of involvement as unprecedented.

“Those who had been in the Black Queens team for some time told me that they had really not gone for any competition where the minister showed as much interest as I did, visiting them even in training camp,” he said.

Mr Adams stressed that such engagement helps bridge the gap between players and the expectations of supporters.

“It’s a matter of motivation, letting them know you appreciate what they are doing, while also helping them understand the expectations of the people,” he added.

He also called for continued public support for Ghana’s national teams, noting that success requires a shared effort between players and fans.

Ghana will be making their fifth appearance at the FIFA World Cup in 2026, where they face a challenging Group L campaign against England, Croatia and Panama.

The Black Stars are scheduled to open their campaign against Panama on 17 June, before taking on England on 23 June and Croatia on 27 June.
