The new Black Stars coach should know our game – Fred Pappoe to GFA

Former vice president of the Ghana Football Association, Fred Pappoe, has urged football authorities to prioritise a coach who understands Ghana’s football identity as the search for a new Black Stars manager gathers pace.

‎His comments come in the wake of the dismissal of Otto Addo, following consecutive defeats to Austria national football team and Germany national football team during recent international friendlies.

‎Speaking to Citi Sports, Pappoe stressed the importance of appointing a coach who can make an immediate impact, particularly with limited time before the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“If we want to go for a coach, we have to go for someone who can hit the ground running, someone who knows our football culture,” he said.

‎Ghana’s coaching history has featured both local and foreign managers, with success often tied to those who quickly adapted to the country’s football structure and player dynamics.

‎With preparations for the World Cup intensifying, the need for continuity and quick results has become a key consideration for decision-makers.

‎GFA president Kurt Okraku recently revealed that more than 600 applications have been received for the vacant role, with an appointment expected within the next two weeks.

‎The Black Stars are due to regroup in May for friendly matches against Mexico national football team and Wales national football team, which will serve as final preparations before the tournament kicks off in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

‎As the search continues, Pappoe’s message underscores a growing consensus, that beyond credentials, the next coach must understand what it means to lead Ghana on the global stage.
