Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Member of Parliament for Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese and Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, has accused the previous Akufo-Addo-led administration of being complicit in illegal mining, also known as galamsey.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Face to Face on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, he criticised the former government for failing to effectively tackle the galamsey menace and allowing party and government officials to profit from it.

“The previous government completely failed to address it. I have said it and I will repeat it — that government was complicit in galamsey. Their party hierarchy was involved,” he stated.

Mr. Ofosu referred to a report by former Environment Minister Prof. Frimpong-Boateng as evidence of the deep involvement of high-ranking officials in the illegal mining industry.

“Prof. Frimpong-Boateng, who they themselves chose to lead the fight, has a report which is damning and shows the involvement of government officials, party officials,” he said.

He further claimed that the former minister had even stated that galamsey was a key source of funding for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“He has gone on record to have said that galamsey was a major source of finance for the NPP. So it was little wonder that they were not interested in fighting it,” Kwakye Ofosu asserted.

The Minister emphasised that Ghanaians were justified in voting the Akufo-Addo administration out of office, citing the public’s anger over the galamsey issue.

“Ghanaians were right to throw them out in the manner that they did. Ghanaians showed righteous indignation, and it is right that they did so,” he added.
