TUC threatens nationwide strike over 12 months of unpaid railway salaries

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has issued a stern ultimatum to the government to settle 12 months of unpaid salaries owed to members of the Railway Workers Union of Ghana by September 30, 2025, or face a nationwide strike.

Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, TUC General Secretary Joshua Ansah said the long-standing salary arrears have plunged railway workers and their families into severe financial hardship.

“We have sent a notice to the government and the owner of the company that if by September 30 and the 12-month outstanding salaries owed to its affiliate are not paid, TUC will embark on a strike,” he stated.

Mr. Ansah urged the government to “look for any means” to immediately clear the debt, warning that the patience of railway workers has run out. He revealed that multiple letters sent to the Ministry of Transport and other officials have yielded no concrete action.

According to the TUC, the situation has worsened due to a sudden cut in government support. Previously, the government covered 70% of the Ghana Railway Company Limited’s salary costs, but this support has reportedly been reduced without explanation.

The TUC also called on the government to suspend the planned October 1, 2025 launch of passenger services on the Tema–Mpakadan Railway line, announced by Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe. Mr. Ansah argued that the operators themselves have not been consulted about the reopening.

The ultimatum follows a formal notification from the Railway Workers Union to the Greater Accra Regional Police Command, announcing plans for a nationwide strike and peaceful picketing on September 30.

The union cited the government’s failure to pay salaries since October 2024 as the basis for the protest.

Reaffirming the TUC’s solidarity with the workers, Mr. Ansah noted that the workers have a historic duty to protect and fight for the fair treatment of railway workers.
