Uganda gives Laryea Kingston historic welcome after U17 World Cup qualification
Former Ghana international Laryea Kingston received a hero’s welcome in Uganda after guiding the country’s U17 national team to qualification for the FIFA U17 World Cup in Qatar.
Hundreds of jubilant fans gathered at Entebbe International Airport to welcome Kingston, his technical staff and the players following their dramatic victory over Ghana’s Black Starlets in the play-off round of the U17 Africa Cup of Nations.
Uganda secured their place at the global tournament after edging out the Black Starlets in a tense penalty shootout, marking a major milestone for youth football in the East African nation.
The team was welcomed by several top officials from the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), including president Justus Mugisha, Executive Committee member Ronnie Kalema, Uganda Youth Football Association chairman Robert Kiwanuka and Fred Katende Malibu from the office of the FUFA president.
Supporters sang and waved flags as the team arrived, celebrating what many described as one of Uganda’s greatest achievements in youth football in recent years.
Kingston, who previously represented Ghana at international level, is expected to remain in charge of the Cubs for the World Cup campaign, with preparations for the tournament already under discussion ahead of the competition in Qatar.
Meanwhile, Ghana national under-17 football team are expected to return home in the coming days after missing out on qualification. Attention is now expected to shift towards rebuilding the squad ahead of next year’s WAFU Zone B qualifiers.
