UGMC Rejects Michael Blackson’s Claims Over Mother’s Treatment

The University of Ghana Medical Centre Ltd. (UGMC) has responded to allegations made by comedian and actor Michael Blackson regarding the care provided to his late mother, insisting that his account of events contains significant inaccuracies.
In a statement issued after Blackson’s comments gained traction on social media on August 4, 2026, the hospital confirmed that his 83-year-old mother died at the facility on July 16 after receiving treatment there for approximately eight weeks.
According to UGMC, an internal review was conducted through its clinical and administrative procedures following the allegations. However, the hospital said its findings did not support the version of events presented publicly by the entertainer.
The Centre explained that Blackson’s mother had been referred from another health facility and remained under its care from May 27 to July 16, 2026, during which medical decisions were made in line with established clinical standards and in the patient’s best interest.
UGMC said it would not release details of the patient’s diagnosis, treatment or medical records, stressing that it remains bound by ethical and professional obligations to protect patient confidentiality, even after death.
The hospital further stated that qualified healthcare professionals oversee all treatment decisions, with designated family representatives consulted whenever necessary.
It also dismissed suggestions that financial issues influence medical care, maintaining that its billing system is transparent, guided by institutional policies and separate from clinical decision-making.
On claims that Blackson’s sister assaulted a member of staff during the admission period, UGMC confirmed the matter had been reported to the appropriate law enforcement authorities and declined further comment while investigations continue.
The hospital said it remains willing to engage the family through the appropriate channels and assured the public that any verified allegations of staff misconduct would be thoroughly investigated and referred to the relevant authorities where necessary.
UGMC also encouraged patients and members of the public with concerns about services received at the facility to use its official client relations channels to lodge complaints for review and resolution.
