2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers: Saintfiet unshaken by Accra pitch concerns ahead of Ghana clash

Mali head coach Tom Saintfiet has dismissed concerns over the condition of the Accra Sports Stadium pitch ahead of Monday’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Ghana.
Addressing the media before the encounter, the Belgian tactician made it clear that he will not use the playing surface as an excuse, stressing that both teams will face the same conditions.
“I have only seen pictures of the pitch. I am not the type of coach who talks about pitches and those circumstances,” Saintfiet said.
“The pitch is for both teams and at the same level. We played on different pitches 10 years ago, 20 years ago — it’s always been part of the game.”
His comments contrast with those of Ghana coach Otto Addo, who recently voiced concerns over the poor state of the stadium surface following the Black Stars’ 1-1 draw with Chad in N’Djamena. Addo suggested the pitch contributed to his team’s struggles in breaking down their opponents.
The stadium’s readiness has since sparked debate among fans and pundits, with calls for urgent upgrades to meet international standards.
Despite the discussions, Saintfiet insists Mali remain focused solely on the task at hand — securing a result that could reignite their push for World Cup qualification.
The Eagles sit fourth in Group I with 12 points, four behind leaders Ghana, and will be desperate to narrow the gap in what is shaping up to be a decisive fixture.
