A former executive secretary to the immediate past Inspector General of Police (IGP), David Asante Appeatu has bemoaned the decision by the interior ministry and the Police administration to arm personnel of the Motor Traffic Transport Department (MTTD).

Superintend retired Peter Toobu says arming personnel of the MTTD will only be a kneejerk reaction as it will cause chaos instead of solving a problem.

He is concerned that not all personnel of the service have the required and requisite skills to be able to handle a gun.

The former executive secretary to the IGP who is now the parliamentary candidate for the NDC in Wa west constituency says giving guns to traffic wardens will be a knee jerk reaction.

He maintains that handing guns to every personnel may even put their lives in danger since not every officer knows how to handle weapons.

“There are a lot of Police officers over the past ten or fifteen years apart from the 5 or 15 bullets that they use in shooting in training at the Police training school they have never held a gun again.

So if you arm everybody don’t be surprised you will find Policemen killing themselves. We should begin to look at how we can get academia involved in conducting research into what we need to do as the Police Service.” He emphasized.
