The Ghana Police Service has interdicted a police officer captured in a viral video allegedly slapping GHOne TV journalist Agyekum Banahene during coverage of the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun.

In a statement released on Friday and signed by Assistant Superintendent of Police Richmond Mensah, the Service confirmed that the officer has been withdrawn from election duties and referred to the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) for further investigation under internal disciplinary procedures.

The incident occurred at the Church of Pentecost, North Odorkor Polling Station 2, where eyewitnesses say the officer confronted the journalist and slapped him after he refused to leave the polling centre while performing his duties.

“The Ghana Police Service has monitored a viral video in which one of our officers is seen assaulting a reporter,” the statement read. “The officer involved has been removed from election duties and is under investigation.”

The police assured the public of a thorough inquiry and promised to provide further updates as the situation unfolds.

The Ablekuma North rerun, involving 19 polling stations, was ordered by the Electoral Commission following disputes and irregularities during the December 2024 general elections.

The rerun has been fraught with tension, including reports of violence and impersonation.

Earlier on Friday, police arrested several individuals posing as fake security personnel near the Awoshie DVLA polling station, further raising security concerns in the constituency.
