Give cocoa farmers what you promised- Miracles tells gov’t

Dennis Miracles Aboagye, aide to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has issued a passionate appeal to the government to honour its campaign promise to cocoa farmers by ensuring fair compensation for their labour.
Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV on Wednesday, August 6, he stated that cocoa farmers continue to face hardship and deserve more than shifting figures and political promises.
“This is a plea. I beg you, these farmers struggle, they suffer, they bleed before they can give us the cocoa. Give them what it is that you promised them. Forget about NPP,” he said passionately.
His comments follow the government’s announcement of a 62.58% increase in the producer price of cocoa for the 2025/2026 season, raising it to US$5,040 per tonne, up from US$3,100.
The adjustment, approved by the Producer Price Review Committee (PPRC) chaired by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, takes effect on Thursday, August 7, coinciding with the start of the new cocoa season.
According to the government, the new price represents 70% of the gross Free-On-Board (FOB) value of US$7,200 per tonne, aligning with President John Mahama’s campaign pledge to farmers.
However, the Minority in Parliament has condemned the move, describing the equivalent of GH₵3,228.75 per bag as “ridiculous, unfair, and completely unacceptable.” They argue that farmers deserve a larger share, especially given record-high global cocoa prices.
Critics also draw comparisons with the previous administration, which paid farmers US$3,100 when the FOB value stood at US$4,850 which is a 63.9% share, despite less favourable market conditions.
