Flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, on Thursday, August 28, officially filed his nomination to contest the party’s upcoming presidential primaries, stressing that the election is not just about selecting a leader but about preserving the soul and values of the party.

Speaking at the NPP headquarters in Asylum Down, Accra, where hundreds of enthusiastic supporters had gathered in branded T-shirts and waving placards such as “Win with Bawumia,” and “Bawumia: Prepared, Formidable and Winnable Candidate,” the former Vice President emphasised the significance of the January 31, 2026 vote.

The nomination process, which opened on July 29 and closes today, August 28, requires each aspirant to pay a total of GH¢600,000—comprised of a GH¢100,000 non-refundable nomination fee and a GH¢500,000 filing fee.

Dr. Bawumia used the occasion to reaffirm his commitment to the grassroots, promising that a future administration under his leadership would recognise and reward party loyalists who have been sidelined or lost jobs.

“I implore you to join me on this journey to rebuild our party and reposition this great tradition to deliver for Ghanaians from 2028. I am committed to doing this with you, the grassroots of the party.

“A future Bawumia government would recognise and reward the sacrifices of our grassroots. Many have lost their jobs under the current government, and we will restore their appointments.”.

Outlining his vision, Dr. Bawumia said his goal is to improve living conditions, reduce the cost of living, and ensure inclusive development through a constituency-based budgeting and development framework.

“My vision is to adopt a constituency-based development and budgeting framework in which local people benefit the most and the well-being of the individual is enhanced,” Dr Bawumia added.

He also urged fellow aspirants to conduct clean, issue-based campaigns focused on ideas and national development rather than internal attacks.

“For the various candidates contesting for flagbearership, I ask, won’t Ghana and the NPP be better off, instead of focusing your guns on Bawumia, you focus on holding the Government accountable to show that you can lead the NPP in holding the NDC accountable.”

“Won’t Ghana and the NPP be better off if instead of focusing on attacking each other, you focus on selling a vision for the Party and the Country?”

“Our true opponent is not within. Our true opponent is out there. We need unity to win. I promise you that just as you have known me to be, I would not do anything to bring division or conflict within the party. If there would be anyone to create problems in the NPP, it wouldn’t be Dr. Bawumia.” he concluded.

The NPP’s presidential primary will decide who leads the party into the 2028 general elections, with the results expected to shape the party’s future and influence the political landscape of Ghana.
