Ghana Premier League: Coach Bashiru of Hohoe United eyes first home win after holding Hearts of Oak

Hohoe United head coach Tijani Abdul Rahim Bashiru believes his side’s resilient performance against Hearts of Oak will fuel their push for a maiden home victory in the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League.
The Volta Region-based club stunned pundits by holding the Phobians to a goalless draw at the Accra Sports Stadium on Matchday 1. Despite being newcomers to the top flight, Hohoe United showcased tactical maturity and defensive grit. Coach Bashiru revealed that his team had studied Hearts of Oak’s pre-season matches in detail, crafting a game plan that neutralized the hosts’ attacking threats—even after going down to ten men in the second half.
“We knew exactly the team we were coming to meet,” Bashiru said. “We equipped our team tactically and mentally. Playing against Hearts of Oak is not all about physical ability but mental strength.”
The result marked a statement of intent from Hohoe United, who earned promotion after a spirited run through Zone III, eliminating seasoned sides like Great Olympics and Okwawu United.
With confidence high, Hohoe United now turn their attention to their first home fixture at the Hohoe Stadium, where they host Young Apostles on Saturday, September 21 at 3:00 GMT. Coach Bashiru is optimistic about converting their away point into a full three at home:
“If we are able to pick one point here [against Hearts of Oak], then at home we have to try as much as possible to pick the three points.”
