A taskforce deployed by the National Concerned Small Scale Miners Association of Ghana has successfully destroyed over 120 pieces of mining equipment used by illegal miners responsible for polluting major rivers in the Ashanti Region.

The operation, which has been ongoing for two weeks, is in support of the government’s anti-galamsey efforts. The taskforce began its mission in the Ahafo Ano South West District, where illegal mining had significantly contaminated the Mankran and Offin Rivers. The team then moved on to Amadaa and Kotokuom in the Atwima Mponua District.

During the raids, many illegal miners fled their sites, leaving behind excavators, chanfan platforms, engines, and other mining equipment. These were promptly destroyed by the taskforce to prevent further environmental damage.

Speaking to journalists in Kumasi, the President of the National Concerned Small Scale Miners Association, Michael Kwadwo Peprah, reiterated the group’s commitment to continuing operations aimed at safeguarding water bodies and farmlands from the damaging effects of illegal mining.

Mr. Peprah emphasized that the Association’s taskforce is working in tandem with the government’s nationwide efforts to combat illegal mining. He further stated that the group would remain focused on educating mining communities about the importance of supporting the national fight against galamsey and its environmental consequences.
