Former captain of the Black Stars, Andre Ayew paid a solidarity visit to the Black Queens at their base at the Erata Hotel on Monday, offering words of encouragement and support as the team prepares for their 2026 WAFCON second-leg qualifier against Egypt.

Ayew’s visit comes at a critical moment, with the Queens recently threatening to boycott the match over unpaid bonuses from their third-place finish at the 2025 WAFCON in Morocco. Each player is owed $9,500, and the team had boycotted training over the weekend in protest.

 Leadership Interventions and Presidential Action

The standoff prompted interventions from:

  • Sports Minister Kofi Adams, who assured payment within the week
  • GFA President Kurt Okraku, whose Monday morning visit helped restore calm
  • The Presidency, which issued a direct order for immediate payment, with processes now underway

Ayew’s presence is seen as a powerful gesture of unity, reinforcing the message that national teams stand together in moments of adversity.

The Queens trained at 5 PM on Monday, with the aim to secure qualification for the 2026 WAFCON, which also serves as a gateway to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. They will be facing off against the Cleopatras of Egypt on Tuesday afternoon at the Accra Sports Stadium in the second leg of the qualifiers.
