Augustine Boakye to miss Ghana-Mexico friendly due to Saint-Etienne play-off duty

Ghana midfielder Augustine Boakye will miss the Black Stars’ international friendly against Mexico after remaining in France with Saint-Etienne for the club’s crucial Ligue 1 playoff campaign.
The 25-year-old has been left out of Ghana’s travelling squad as Saint-Etienne prepare for a high-stakes playoff tie against OGC Nice on Tuesday, with the French side fighting to preserve their top-flight status.
Boakye had initially been expected to join Ghana’s training camp in Mexico ahead of Friday’s pre-World Cup friendly, but the timing of the playoff fixtures has forced the midfielder to prioritise club duties.
The former Wolfsberger AC player has become an increasingly influential figure for Saint-Etienne this season and is regarded as a key part of the squad heading into the decisive matches.
Ghana have been training in Puebla since earlier this week as preparations continue for Friday’s encounter against Mexico, one of the co-hosts of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Head coach Carlos Queiroz is expected to use the match to assess fringe players and emerging talents as he continues shaping his squad ahead of the tournament.
The Black Stars technical team had hoped to closely monitor Boakye during the international window, but his absence means the midfielder will now focus fully on helping Saint-Etienne avoid relegation.
Ghana are expected to remain in Mexico for the next two days before facing Mexico on Friday in what will be a key test ahead of the World Cup preparations.
