There’s been approaches from the Sports Ministry – Eddie Nketiah’s father on his Ghanaian nationality switch

Ghana’s efforts to persuade Crystal Palace striker Eddie Nketiah to commit his international future to the Black Stars have received a boost after his father revealed that officials have already made contact with the player.
Speaking on Joy Prime TV, Edward Nketiah Snr confirmed that approaches had been made by Ghana’s Sports Ministry and other stakeholders as speculation over a potential nationality switch continues.
“I know there’s been approaches from the Sports Ministry and a few others, and that’s great,” he said.
The 26-year-old forward remains eligible to represent Ghana despite making a senior appearance for England in a friendly against Australia in 2023. Under FIFA regulations, players can switch national teams if their senior appearances came only in non-competitive matches.
Nketiah’s father suggested that the final decision rests entirely with the player.
“He sustained an injury this time around, so who knows. But when the decision comes, he has to make it. I’m sure he’s mature enough now to do it himself,” he added.
The former Arsenal striker enjoyed a prolific youth international career with England, becoming the country’s all-time leading scorer at Under-21 level with 16 goals. However, he has struggled to establish himself in the senior England setup and has not featured in recent squads.
Interest in bringing Nketiah into the Black Stars fold has persisted for several years, with reports indicating that both Ghanaian football authorities and representatives close to the player have held discussions about a possible switch.
Any progress on those talks has been complicated by a serious hamstring injury suffered by Nketiah towards the end of the 2025-26 campaign with Crystal Palace.
Despite the setback, Ghana remain hopeful that the striker could eventually choose to represent the four-time African champions, potentially strengthening their attacking options ahead of future international competitions.
