A Son’s Final Tribute: Mustapha Hamid Mourns Mother’s Passing on His Birthday

It was a bittersweet milestone that Dr. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid will never forget — his 55th birthday marked not by celebration, but by loss, as his mother, Hajia Adama Musah, breathed her last on the same day.

Three days later, on Sunday, June 14, 2026, the former Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority stood with family, friends and dignitaries at the Police Mosque in Cantonments to say goodbye.

The Janaza prayers began at 10:00 a.m., and by noon, Hajia Musah had been laid to rest at the Madina Muslim Cemetery across town.

A brief illness had taken her from the world — a woman whose impact extended far beyond the titles society might assign her. Those gathered to mourn remembered Hajia Musah as a pillar in her family’s life, a grandmother whose presence mattered, an aunt whose love was felt across generations.

The turnout spoke to the regard in which she was held. Religious scholars mingled with politicians, and family embraced with strangers united in grief.

Among the notable attendees were former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and John Boadu, the NPP figure making a bid for the party’s top job.

But it was her son’s words that struck deepest. Standing in the aftermath of the burial, Dr. Abdul-Hamid refused to surrender to despair. Instead, he spoke of acceptance — of trusting in a higher wisdom that never overloads those it tests.

His gratitude, he insisted, belonged to Allah alone.

“In all things, I am grateful to Allah,” he declared, his voice steady despite the weight of the moment. “There are mothers who died and there were no sons to bid them farewell. Therefore, in all things, give thanks.”

It was less a lament and more a meditation on privilege — the privilege of being present, of honouring a life lived, of standing with loved ones in the darkest hour.
