Accra traders, transport unions protest land encroachment at CMB lorry station

Traders and transport unions in Accra’s CMB enclave staged a protest today, Tuesday, September 16, 2025, against what they claim is an attempt by private developers to seize land designated for the lorry station.

Led by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), the Concerned Drivers Association, the Commercial Transport Operators, and the Container Owners Association, the protest began at Ridge Roundabout and is set to end at Jubilee House, where a petition will be presented to the Presidency.

The unions argue that the encroachment has displaced traders and drivers who depend on the lorry station for their livelihoods, leading to increased street trading, traffic congestion, and safety risks in the area.

The demonstrators are calling on the government to intervene and safeguard the station, which they say is vital for both transport and trade in Accra.

Presidential Staffer, Bridget Otoo, who received the petition on behalf of Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, assured the protestors that their concerns would be taken seriously and communicated to the Presidency.
