Four men suspected of carrying out a string of armed robberies across the Upper East and North East regions have been apprehended by police, though one of them died before he could face justice.

Acting on intelligence, the Ghana Police Service moved in on the suspects in Bolgatanga on May 5, 2026, netting Abdulai Ibrahim, Amadu Rahman, Amadu Sulemana — widely known as Saaga — and Adu Yakubu.

The four had been on investigators’ radar over a wave of attacks targeting motorists, mobile phone owners and gold miners in the Talensi District and surrounding areas.

Piecing together the gang’s movements, police established that the group had converged on Gbane, a bustling mining community in the Talensi District, on May 4, having made their way from Yagaba and Fumbisi expressly to carry out a robbery.

Their haul that day included four motorbikes and a number of mobile phones seized from unsuspecting victims.

Under interrogation, the suspects reportedly owned up to a catalogue of offences — among them a series of holdups along the Yagaba-Fumbisi and Yagaba-Nanguruma roads.

Perhaps most notably, they allegedly admitted to being behind the robbery at the Vikandi Phone Shop in Bolgatanga on March 22, 2025, an incident that had gripped public attention after footage circulated online showing the attackers brandishing an AK-47 assault rifle.

The gang also confessed to raiding mining sites in Gbane on multiple occasions, carting off gold and large amounts of cash from miners and local residents.

A breakthrough came when the suspects guided officers to a farm on the outskirts of Biung, near Gbane, where gang leader Amadu Rahman had allegedly stashed an AK-47 rifle.

A search of the location turned up the weapon — bearing serial number 68100563 — along with 87 rounds of live ammunition, all concealed inside a fertiliser sack.

However, Rahman collapsed during the retrieval operation and was rushed to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

His remains have been deposited at the hospital morgue pending an autopsy.

The three surviving suspects remain in police custody and are expected to be brought before a court to answer for their alleged crimes.
